We caught up with Tom Williams, who joined Anglia Innovation Partnership as Estates and Facilities Manager in June 2023, to tell us a bit more about his role.
- What does your role involve?
I am responsible for making sure everything in the buildings across the AIP site are safe and fit for purposes. This includes things like, heating, cooling, lifts, cleaning & maintenance to name a few. I also have responsibility for the Estate and making sure everything is clean and tidy and well presented.
- What is your favourite thing about your role?
Variety is the spice of life, working in this role no two days are the same. One day Im on the roof organising for a fan to be replaced, the next I am in the comms room working out what to do with a faulty air conditioning unit. I like to get out and about around site and this role allows for plenty of that.
- What is challenging about your role?
Having not come from a scientific background, I am having to get to grips with a lot of systems and equipment that I had previously never heard of. For example RO water machines, Autoclaves & Fume Hoods to name a few. Its interesting though and I’m a quick learner.
- Where have you worked before?
I worked for 10 years for a charity ending up as the Head of Estates for them, after this I worked for about 5 years as Head of Residential property for a large private Landlord in London. I have also worked in a chip shop, a green grocers, several pubs, a council, a swimming pool and a hotel.
- An interesting fact about yourself?
I was once appeared on the game show Brainteaser, and annoyingly I was beaten in the first round after my lack of knowledge of Coronation street let me down.
- What do you like to do outside of work?
I am pretty busy with my wife and 3 kids most of the time but when I have some spare time, I will usually spend it playing golf. I have only just started but I love it. In addition, I love going on holiday, skiing and cycling.
