What is gene editing and precision breeding?
Precision breeding can help scientists develop healthier, more resilient crops, in turn supporting food security, reducing pressure on the environment, and helping plants better withstand pests, diseases and a changing climate. In England, new regulations for precision bred plants were passed on 13 May 2025 and came into effect on 14 November 2025, creating new opportunities for plant and microbial science to improve the health of plants, people and the planet.
